Three Simple Office Holiday Party Dos and Don’ts To Remember

It’s that time of the year again when your whole team gets together before the Holidays. For a company, it’s not just about celebrating – having a special office holiday party, whether it’s a formal dinner or something more original, can tremendously help with team bonding and showcasing your company culture and values.

If office parties are the year-end chance to relax with coworkers and maybe get to spend time with people from other departments or teams, it can also turn into HR’s worst nightmare. The music is blasting, the cocktails are delicious and staff members are given a chance to let off steam for a whole year’s worth of frustrations. To get around possible disasters, make sure to consider the staff party as an extension of the workplace. In other words, the party is the perfect occasion to have fun and strengthen bonds in a way that no meeting or group project could achieve, but it is NOT your usual Friday night out. Follow these three simple rules and everything should go for the best.


DON’T

“The lady who had my job before me was pretty legendary. One year at an office party, she got really drunk and started drinking whiskey straight out of the bottle she was carrying around. The boss’ 12-year-old daughter was talking loudly behind her and without turning around, the employee yelled: “SHUT THE F* UP!”, turner around, realized who it was and immediately went sober.”

DO

Stay away from the backbiting and rude comments/jokes. Keep the discussions light and positive. Whether you have a few alcoholic drinks or not, the last thing you should engage in is gossiping. Stay away from negative conversations and focus on having a good time with your coworkers or chances are, it won’t end well. No one wants to be in the middle of drama on the following day.


DON’T

“That one time Martin drank all the alcohol in the mini bar after the party then locked himself out of his hotel room in his underwear. Or the time Martin drank all the alcohol in the mini bar after the party and got himself stuck in the fire escape stairs. Or that time Martin… Yeah, I could go on with Martin.”

DO

Pace yourself. Yes, the end of year party is the perfect occasion to show people a side of you they might not know yet. That is to say being more relaxed, having good fun and engaging with colleagues about their lives outside of the office. However, remember that this is a work event, free drinks or not. We’ve all heard embarrassing office party stories and no one wants to be “that guy.” You know, the one who drinks too much and inflicts drunken karaoke, tearful confessions and other forms of drama on everyone else.


DON’T

“I’ve recently gotten a job at a nice company and everything’s great, except there’s a holiday party and, well, truthfully I don’t want to attend. It’s not because I dislike any of the people there, I’m just not really a social animal and I don’t really enjoy those sorts of events.”

DO

Show up. There are many reasons why employees might be unenthusiastic about their office party, but even if you are not the partying type or would simply rather stay home with your loved ones, showing up for at least an hour or two can make a huge difference as not attending sends a negative message. You don’t have to stay all night, but being present does count. You’ll get a chance to know your coworkers better and will be in the loop when there are smiles all around the following day as people recall the festivities.
